In 2016, the Office of Student Engagement created the following internal definition for Sense of Belonging:
“The Office of Student Engagement serves as a bridge to opportunities where students feel connected, cared for, respected and safe. We assist students as they turn involvement into deeper levels of engagement, which lead to many intersecting communities forming within Wake Forest University.”
To better understand the impact of new student organization involvement on student sense of belonging, a survey and focus group questions were created. Members of student organizations that were chartered in the 2016-17 academic year were assessed, in order to understand what impact involvement in the new organization had on members’ Sense of Belonging after being on campus for one year.
149 students from 14 organizations participated in the assessment. The Office of Student Engagement is using the results to help student organization leaders understand the impact they have on their fellow students’ feelings of involvement, as well as how they engage as members of the Wake Forest Community.
